HOW TO KEEP YOUR CAR – AND ITS CONTENTS, SAFE
- A moment is all it takes for a thief to steal your car - or something in it. Top
tips to beat thieves:
- If there is nothing left in your car then there is nothing for the criminal to take.
Even a packet of mints or some loose change might tempt a thief. Just think how much
inconvenience would be caused by having your car window broken!
- Criminals target filling stations, the school run and other places where drivers
are tempted to leave cars with the keys in the ignition.
- At home, find somewhere safe to store your car keys that is out of sight and away
from doors and windows. Remember that thieves can ‘fish’ car keys out through letter
boxes or cat flaps.
- Fit a detachable radio or radio with detachable fascia and remember to take it with
you.
- If you are lucky enough to have a garage then use it. Most garages are filled with
junk and the most valuable item – the car - is left outside on the road!
- Always park in well-lit areas and report any street lights that are not working to
the Street Doctor: streetdoctor@northamptonshire.gov.uk.
- If you leave your driving documents in the vehicle, a thief will have all he needs
to sell it!
- If you are parking in town, choose a car park that has the PARK MARK accreditation.
This means that it meets Police specification and is a much safer place to leave
your car.
- Remember – CHECK that you have parked in a safe place ..REMOVE everything from inside
and take it with you……SECURE your vehicle, shutting windows, locking the door and
setting the alarm.
SAT NAVs
Satellite navigations systems continue to be very sought after by car criminals in
the county. We are again reminding people to remove these devices from their vehicles
every time they leave it – and never be tempted to put it in the boot or glove box
as you never know who might be watching. And don’t forget to wipe away the telltale
rubber sticker marks from your windscreen!
If a criminal can remove a sat nav, so can the owner and the secret to preventing
this crime is to remove it before the thief gets the chance.
