A HOT SUMMER – AN OPEN WINDOW MAY LET IN MORE THAN A COOL BREEZE!

We all like to let fresh air into our homes, even when the sun isn’t shining. But unfortunately an open window or door is an invitation to burglars looking for the right opportunity – as many as one in four burglaries occur via open windows or doors.

Follow these top tips to help keep your home safe this summer:

  • If you open a window when it gets warm make sure you close it before you go out.
  • Keep your front and back doors locked at all times – even when you are at home. Remember - they’re not called locks for nothing!
  • Keep your house and car keys in a safe place, and make sure that they are out of sight so that they cannot be seen from the outside.
  • Keep keys out of sight and reach from cat flaps, letterboxes and downstairs doors and windows.

Remember not to forget to lock your garages and sheds this summer. These often store items of value, such as pedal bikes, or tools that can be used to break into the home, so ensuring that they are kept secured is really important.

  • Keep shed/garage doors, including integral garage doors, locked at all times.
  • Keep valuable items such as bikes and lawnmowers securely padlocked to anchor points, or immoveable objects within the garage.
  • Fit a battery operated shed alarm.
  • If your house is protected by a burglar alarm consider extending the alarm to cover the garage, or fit a custom made battery-operated alarm.
  • Never leave spare house keys in your shed or garage.

If you see or hear anything unusual or suspicious please contact Northamptonshire Police on 08453 700700 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111. The information that you supply may help to prevent and detect a crime.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR CAR – AND ITS CONTENTS, SAFE

A moment is all it takes for a thief to steal your car - or something in it.

Top tips to beat thieves:

  • If there is nothing left in your car then there is nothing for the criminal to take. Even a packet of mints or some loose change might tempt a thief. Just think how much inconvenience would be caused by having your car window broken!
  • Criminals target filling stations, the school run and other places where drivers are tempted to leave cars with the keys in the ignition
  • At home, find somewhere safe to store your car keys that is out of sight and away from doors and windows. Remember that thieves can ‘fish’ car keys out through letter boxes or cat flaps.
  • Fit a detachable radio or radio with detachable fascia and remember to take it with you
  • If you are lucky enough to have a garage then use it. Most garages are filled with junk and the most valuable item – the car - is left outside on the road!
  • Always park in well-lit areas and report any street lights that are not working to the Street Doctor: streetdoctor@northamptonshire.gov.uk
  • If you leave your driving documents in the vehicle, a thief will have all he needs to sell it!
  • If you are parking in town, choose a car park that has the PARK MARK accreditation. This means that it meets Police specification and is a much safer place to leave your car
  • Remember – CHECK that you have parked in a safe place ..REMOVE everything from inside and take it with you……SECURE your vehicle, shutting windows, locking the door and setting the alarm

SAT NAVs -

Satellite navigations systems continue to be very sought after by car criminals in the county. We are again reminding people to remove these devices from their vehicles every time they leave it – and never be tempted to put it in the boot or glove box as you never know who might be watching. And don’t forget to wipe away the telltale rubber sticker marks from your windscreen!

If a criminal can remove a sat nav, so can the owner and the secret to preventing this crime is to remove it before the thief gets the chance.

Northampton East Sector Safer Community Teams

May 2008 Working together locally

Sergeants swap teams A significant change has recently taken place, with the two Sergeants, Julian Williams and Steve Bedford, swapping team responsibilities. Julian now specifically looks after the Thorplands and Lumbertubs SCT, while Steve leads the Abington and Weston and the Ecton Brook and Billing teams. We hope to have the benefit of an additional Sergeant on the Sector in the near future.

Other new staff

We are pleased to welcome four new members of staff to the to the Sector. Police Community Support Officers, Sarah Lee Collins, Christine Duggan and John Rista join us, and PC Simon Pinchin returns to the Force after a period serving with Devon and Cornwall. We have taken their arrival as an opportunity to move around some of the SCT team members, to make sure we are making the best use of their skills and experience. It has also made it possible to rebalance the staffing across the three SCTs. Full details can be found on the Force website SCT pages at www.northants.police.uk/sct. Surgery dates on website You can also find details of the Teams’ Surgeries on to discuss any policing issues, concerns or ideas they may have with us. They are also an excellent opportunity for us to get to know the residents of our areas. Everyone is welcome.

First birthday celebrations
The Force have recently celebrated the first anniversary of full implementation of neighbourhood policing and Safer Community Teams across the county and our teams took part by holding an event at the Weston Favell Shopping Centre.
Inspector Tom Thompson and other members of the teams staffed a display for several hours, distributing information as well as balloons, sweets, and fridge
magnets personalised with each SCTs contact details, and a photo of Julian or Steve!
These activities were supported countywide marketing campaign to further raise the profile of SCTs and encourage people to share their concerns and issues
about the local area. Our ‘birthday party’ proved a real success, with a great deal of interest shown by shoppers, who raised a variety of questions and queries with the teams. They also consumed a considerable amount of confectionery!

Joint Action Groups
Much of the SCTs work involves working with partner agencies, and Joint Action Groups (JAGs) have been set up to make the most of the opportunities offered by working together. The JAGs consist of a variety people from different organisations who are able to offer knowledge or resources relevant to the issues being addressed. Members meet regularly to progress action on the community’s identified priorities—more details on this overleaf.

Latest News
Safer Community Teams work together with the community and other organisations to tackle local problems, helping improve the quality of life for local residents.

The three Northampton East Sector SCTs cover Abington and Weston, Ecton Brook and Billing, Thorplands and Lumbertubs wards.

This bulletin is to keep stakeholders up to date with our activities and the activities of the Joint Action Groups for the three areas, as well as offer information and advice relevant to our local communities. We hope you find the information informative and useful and we would welcome any feedback you may have, or suggestions regarding the content of future such bulletins.

Ecton Brook & Billing and Thorplands & Lumbertubs

The Northampton East JAG, together with two Community Forums and a Neighbourhood Management Board cover the rest of the East Sector SCTs. A new
Neighbourhood Co-ordinator, Peter Strachen, has recently taken over the reins from Colin Davies. Peter is employed by the Borough Council and currently works
out of the Guildhall. The issues identified by the communities of Ecton Brook
and Billing, and Thorplands and Lumbertubs are youth nuisance, litter and fly-tipping, motorcycle nuisance and
vehicle crime. The East JAG is currently concentrating much of its energy on creating opportunities for diverting young people into constructive activities, in addition to looking at ways of removing locations where nuisance is concentrated.
The Integrated Youth Offer has been surveying the needs and desires of young people and will be assessing how best to act on its findings. The opportunities for young people over the forthcoming school summer holidays are being reviewed, and a Summer School in Bellinge will offer great opportunities for a large number young people across the area. A number of youngsters from Billing will be taking part in the Fire Service Action Reaction Consequence scheme in May.
TEAM UPDATES
The SCT officers spend as much time as possible out of the police station and patrolling their beats. As such, there will not always be an officer from the relevant SCT immediately available in the office.

Therefore, when you contact us by telephone on 08453 700700, to make sure your enquiry receives the most appropriate response, it is advisable to explain the nature of your call to the call operative who answers your call. This will ensure your enquiry is dealt with in the most effective way. Depending on the nature of the incident, the Force Control Room may deploy patrolling SCT officers or if it is an emergency or requires an urgent response, one of our immediate response officers from the Incident Resolution Teams will attend. Alternatively, your call may be directed to helpdesk staff who are able to provide more general advice over the phone. If the matter is not urgent, and you would like to speak directly to a member of your local Safer Community Team, please leave a message for them to contact you when they are next available.
